By simplifying the shapes of animal bodies, students can create an abstract representation of an animal while exploring patterns, textures and shapes in printmaking. Students will create Nordic Folk Art inspired Colorado native animals by printing on paper with found objects and collage those prints into the shapes that create an animal. Students will view the artwork of contemporary screen printer Sanna Annukka who often depicts animals and patterns in her prints. Students will research the animals they choose to recreate in their work and infuse their findings into their work.

The selection of prints below were used as the base materials for student’s animal collages. Although we cut up these artworks to create our animals, I believe they are quite beautiful and noteworthy on their own. Students created patterns by printing on colored paper with found objects such as forks, potato mashers, thread wheels, bubble wrap, foam blocks, wood blocks, bottle caps, corks and more!
